2016 Pacific Update: call for papers

Monday 18 July to Tuesday 19 July 2016, The University of the South Pacific (USP), Suva, Fiji 

The Asian Pac Update1Development Bank (ADB), the Australian National University’s Development Policy Centre, and the University of the South Pacific (USP) are pleased to announce that the 2016 Pacific Update Conference will be held on July 18-19, 2016, at the University of the South Pacific Laucala Campus, Suva, Fiji.

The Pacific Update Conference is the premier forum for discussing important issues of public policy in the Pacific. This annual event gathers policymakers, academics and researchers, business people, and development practitioners to present and discuss economic, political, and social developments in the region. Perspectives from multiple disciplines are encouraged. Sessions of the two day Conference will be oriented around policy issues of pressing importance to countries in the Pacific region. For example:

  • Improving business environments in the region
  • Assessing the costs of non-communicable diseases and designing responses
  • Developments in migration and remittance flows and their socioeconomic effects
  • Enhancing the benefits of new or enhanced internet connectivity
  • Adjusting to rapid rises or falls in tourism arrival
  • Efforts to promote export supply chain and niche product market development
  • Global economic risks, and policies for macroeconomic and fiscal stability
  • Linking tourism and agricultural development
  • Managing and sustaining fishing license fees and windfall revenues
  • Pacific trust fund developments and performance
  • Managing aid and raising domestic revenues
  • Raising resilience to disasters and climate change

Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words, include a list of author(s) and their affiliation(s), and should indicate the corresponding author. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is April 30, 2016. Decision on accepted papers will be announced on May 31, 2016. Funding for travel to the conference will be available for a limited number of participants who would need to travel to Suva to participate and need assistance in funding their attendance.

Macarena Rojas is a Program Officer at the Development Policy Centre. She studied journalism and has a background in program coordination. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Studies from The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
