Upcoming Canberra event – ‘Equality: The linchpin of successful development’?

Tuesday, 12 November @ 6pm
James O Fairfax Theatre, National Gallery of Australia, Parkes Place, Parkes

In May the Development Policy Centre hosted former World Bank Chief Economist Francois Bourguignon. In his public lecture he talked about two important trend reversals in global inequality over the last 25 years: the inequality between countries has started to decrease after two centuries of steady increase and inequality within many countries has started to rise after a long period of stability, in particular in developed countries.

This November the One Just World forum is returning to Canberra with a panel discussion starring Richard Wilkinson, well-known author of The Spirit Level, to continue the conversation on global inequality What are the key contributors to inequality? And what strategies can be adopted by governments, corporations and aid agencies to support the journey toward a more equitable world?

Speakers at the forum are:

  • Richard Wilkinson, co-author of The Spirit Level and co-founder of The Equality Trust. A global leader in the field, Wilkinson has studied the social effects of income inequality for decades.
  • Sarah Cook, Director of United Nations Research Institute for Social Development.
  • Helen Szoke, Chief Executive, Oxfam Australia.
  • David Lansley, Senior Economist, Policy Research & Government Relations, World Vision Australia.

You can register for the event here. If you can’t make it to the event, a recording will be made available on the OJW website in the weeks following the forum.
