Pacific islanders in PNG’s construction industry: PAILS Forum 2016

Carmen Voigt-Graf, Devpolicy Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at the National Research Institute (NRI) in Port Moresby, was invited by the World Bank to present at the third PAILS (“Pacific Island Labour Sending”) Forum held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, from 19 to 21 April 2016. She spoke on “Opportunities for Pacific Islanders in PNG’s construction industry” to an audience of government officials from various Pacific island countries, Australia and New Zealand, employers and recruitment agencies in the construction, aged care and tourism and hospitality industries, training providers, various regional and international organisations, and academics. The focus of this year’s Forum was to explore employment opportunities for Pacific islanders in the construction, aged care and tourism and hospitality sectors beyond the seasonal agricultural work opportunities in Australia and New Zealand under the Seasonal Worker Program (SWP) and Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme. Devpolicy Visiting Fellow Dr Richard Curtain also spoke at the conference on opportunities in aged care, and we’ll be featuring a post from Richard shortly.
