Building AIIB: Asia’s new infrastructure development bank and Australia’s strategic role

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank(AIIB) was established in 2016 with 57 founding members including Australia. By the end of2020, the bank had 103 approved members.

The AIIB has approved 233 projects since 2016.As of 18 September 2023, the bank had 233approved projects, US$44.61 billion in approved financing and US$36.81 billion in committed financing.

The President of the AIIB, Mr Jin Liqun, visited Australia and delivered a public lecture at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University.

Before being elected as the Bank’s first President, he previously served as Vice President and then Ranking Vice President of the Asian Development Bank and as Alternate Executive Director for China at the World Bank and at the Global Environment Facility.
