Elections and Politics in Papua New Guinea

Event Details

Papua New Guinea’s next election is scheduled to occur in 2022. In this presentation we will provide an overview of electoral and parliamentary politics in Papua New Guinea. Our presentation will cover electoral quality and trends, voter choices, women candidates, and the dynamics of parliamentary politics.

As we cover these topics, we will highlight many of the problems that plague electoral politics and political governance in Papua New Guinea. Yet we will also cover potential solutions such as the proposed introduction of Temporary Special Measures to ensure women’s representation. We will also discuss positive aspects of electoral politics, and the possibility of constructive change in coming years.

This presentation is based on the speakers’ chapter in the forthcoming ANU-UPNG edited volume on contemporary issues in PNG.
