Abstract:
Once upon a time governance was not a thing in development. It was only about thirty years ago that the ideas of a few academic scribblers began to filter into the development discourse and challenge the contemporary economic orthodoxy – the Washington Consensus.
The purpose of this note is to summarise six of these ideas and to explain why they matter for development. Even after 30 years these six ideas seem a relevant as ever. They also seem to be entering the mainstream of development thinking.
