Mapping the invisible — NGOs and health

An ANU PhD student is appealing to people interested in health in developing countries to complete a brief survey designed to map the work of NGOs in the field.

Belinda Thompson is researching not-for-profit, non-government hospitals and clinics in developing countries – a big task given there is no centralised list of facilities and many of the hospitals and clinics work independently of the larger, established NGO structures.

As a starting point for the research, Belinda is trying to assemble a ‘living’ list of facilities which can be shared and updated.

“This research is vitally important because these facilities are literally saving tens of thousands of lives, yet we know very little about them,” she said.

“I am hopeful that by the end of my PhD research not only will the donor community know more about their work, but the facilities themselves will find synergies and ways they could work together to grow and prosper in the future.”

Whether you have any personal knowledge of a facility or not, your answers to her brief four-question survey will help further this research. Complete the survey here.

Anyone interested in following the outcomes of the survey or her broader research in this area can leave their email at the end of the survey for future updates. Full details on how the data will be stored are available on the survey page.
