Donors give Afghan govt poor marks but reaffirm support

Western donors demanded progress on governance, particularly on reducing corruption, at a meeting in Kabul this week assessing the Afghan government’s performance against targets agreed on last year.

“The Afghans can’t afford to continue with business as usual,” said Vygaudas Usackas, the European Union’s special representative for Afghanistan.

“They know that like any developing country, they will continue to receive aid, the question is whether they will continue to get it on an exceptional level.”

Meanwhile, JICA is substantially reducing its number of aid workers out of the country after an upsurge in attacks.
